Disappointing for the price

+ : The beach was amazing, the place was peaceful, very quiet, there were many climbing routes which were comfortable to climb the whole afternoon thanks to the shade, the food was relatively varied and tasty (depending on tastes though) and they were willing to adapt for vegetarians, vegan, gluten and milk free products (except for breakfast but I guess it would have worked if one insisted), the staff was generally friendly and uncomplicated but almost none understood english. The answer to most of our questions was "I don't know". The boss (who we saw only once in 4 days) was very arranging.
- : from a european viewpoint, it is hard to find ok to pay 3200 baht /night for 2 for a tent (with a bed and sheets) without towels, no soap in the toilets, and apparently no upkeep of the place other than sweeping and removing the material brought by the sea (which is actually hard work)... we found it such a pity as the place could be absolutely perfect with a little more upkeep which would be easy considering the number of people working there! Also apparently there was supposed to be free wifi but it appeared to be very complicated to borrow a phone even for a few minutes though the staff spent most of their time on their phones. If you intend to CLIMB: BEWARE of the material. Most of the harnasses were completely rusted. If you are a beginner: don't climb with a local guide as their belaying way is extremely UNSECURE.
Finally there were quite a lot of thaïs during the weekend so it might just be that the place is meant for thaïs and foreigners with thaï mentality ':D the place remains amazingly quiet and beautiful...

New Years to remember!
After an adventure by long boat on a stormy ocean we made it to this island paradise. If you are looking for something off the beaten path then this is a great place to get away from the crowds and enjoy a stunning beach and clear waters.
We came and stayed for four days, the first of which was New Years Eve. We were there with another family both of us with teenage kids. It was very chill but we still found lots to do from swimming and snorkeling, to kayaking and volleyball, the kids even tried climbing up the limestone cliffs which attracted some pretty serious climbers from around the world. That was pretty cool watching them climb in the cool of the afternoon.

If you are expecting luxury accommodation, this is not your place, there is lots of sand, and the beds in the tents are hard. It was quite cool when we were there so we didn't find the heat too bad. It was nice to have electricity at night to charge our phones for photos and music. The cookhouse makes good meals, but be prepared for spicy! There was lots of food and you could also order fish the day before if you wanted to add to your meal. There was an "on your honor" beach bar for beers or cokes as well which was really nice.

This is not the place for those who must wear designer prescription glasses or must have your bed made and your room cleaned each day. LOL. However if that is what you need for your Thailand island resort vacation I would suggest the Koh Mook Sivalai Beach Resort on Muk Island. Surrounded by amazing tropical nature, Sivalai will offer you an unforgettable feeling of complete relaxation at this most exotic resort surrounded by beaches. For the Designer sunglasses set this might be your perfect holiday getaway. However if you are like us with teenagers who love to "rough it", in a place of unspoiled natural beauty, remember no trees were cut down and almost no concrete was used in the resort's construction, then the Laoliang Island Resort might just be the spot for you.

Also if you want internet, just forget it. And if you like to gamble, again a nother forget it. However that statement comes with a caveat. Despite laws against gambling, illegal casinos are widespread in Thailand. And you might wonder is online gambling illegal in Thailand. Yes it is. Your best bet for real money slots is Singapore but they also have restrictions. For instance online gambling is legal if it is done through an exempt operator. Currently, only Singapore Pools and Singapore Turf Club have been granted certificates of exemption under the RGA. I suggest you forget the online gambling or land basesd gambling on a trip to the Laoliang Island Resort. Enjoy the place foor what it is. A gambling trip vacation is for another time and defintely a different location. I would suggest perhaps, Macau or the Casino de Genting in Malaysia. Now that is perhaps one of the most magnificent mountaintop casino resort complexes you will ever encounter.

The water was clear and there is pretty good snorkeling right out in front of the campsite. However, depending upon the season there can be mosquitoes and sand flies.
It was a great place to chill for four days. Definitely would recommend! But I must admit it was nice to spend the next week at the Koh Mook Sivalai Beach Resort for a different experience where I did sneak some sun time in my prescription designer sunglasses that I brought just in case...:)

nice, quiet island
this is my favorite quiet island in Thailand. one beautiful beach, great sea, good snorkeling, kayaking, and rock climbing off the beach. laoliang is everything i was looking for in a island-beach getaway.

most of southern thailand has SOOO MANY tourists during the high season. it was great to go to an island with less then 40 guests. And the beach next door was even nicer with two people living there.

the tents on the beach were the most comfortable tents i have ever slept in. two rooms, two beds and a fan. it is only a couple of meters walk to the beach.

the food was very good and many of the dishes were true Thai food. If you are looking for your Thai comfort food like pad thai, green curry then you will be disappointed. but i had the best Gaang Som and Matsaman chicken here on Laoliang

overall, I highly recommend this place. whether you are looking to relax, or be active, this place is a great retreat from the tourist zones of southern thailand.

Paradise almost lost

People complain too much on this website, can’t they understand that this island is totally isolated and that everything has to be brought in every day by boat. Of course the food is pretty basic, really, what do people expect, gourmet cuisine for THB 1,500 a night including all food and accommodation. Get real! The food is really good value for the price charged, I enjoyed every meal I ate there. The every-other-day seafood buffet is especially welcome. I heard people moaning about the food while I stayed here recently and couldn’t believe what a sad bunch of losers they were.

This is paradise almost lost. There is simply nowhere else like it in Thailand. Everyone agrees the location is 100% paradisical, why can’t they stop expecting too much for the money they have paid? We loved this place, it is wonderful precisely because it is not over-developed – no 7-11’s, just one quiet little bar, no sleaze, almost no concrete. It’s the most beautiful tropical island I’ve ever been too, by a long chalk. People who want a la carte cuisine and room service should stick with the the hordes of mass tourists in the Holiday Inns and Best Westerns, not come here and moan on TA later. Don’t they understand that by doing so they can damage this place? I understand that some visitors had been oversold the place and were expecting luxury, so were disappointed. Thankfully our travel agent Andaman Adventures told us exactly what to expect here (and at the other destinations we visited) so we knew what to expect. I want to see Lao Liang thrive, so that I can come back, which I hope very much to do, as as far as I am concerned this is the closest place to paradise on the face of the planet.

Gorgeous island, but not for everyone

My wife and I spent three nights on Lao Liang, and it's a rather unique experience. If you decide to stay here, make sure you know what you're getting into.

On the positive side:
1. The island itself is gorgeous. In modern Thailand, this is as close as you're going to get to the fictional island in "The Beach."

2. There's a decent reef right offshore. It's nowhere near as splendid as what you'll see diving the Surins or the Similans, but for a snorkel-able reef, it's not bad.

3. The island is mostly visited by rock climbers...meaning that the overfed package tourists that have taken over the rest of the Andaman Coast aren't anywhere to be found.

4. The prices are affordable. With 3 meals/day included, plus sea kayak rental and accomodation, we paid US $83/night for 2 people.

5. If you're a rock climber, this place is paradise.

Now, the downsides:

1.) They call the tents 'luxury', but there's nothing luxury about them, except perhaps their size. The mattresses were the most uncomfortable mattresses I've slept on in many years.

2.) The seafood BBQ (every other night for dinner) was good, but the rest of the food was bland and relatively tasteless. If you're a fan of Thai food, don't expect to be delighted.

3.) If it rains -- as it did for the entire time we were there, even though it was the heart of dry season -- there's nothing to do but read. Which is fine if that's what you're after.

Overall, in a time when much of Thailand is being buried under an endless series of mega-resorts catering to package tourists, I'm thrilled that places like Lao Liang still exist. But just make sure you're up for a camping trip, because that's what Lao Liang really is.

Wonderful Island with nice base camp
We spent one week on in Lao Liang Island Resort over X-Mas and had wonderful time at this remote and amazingly beautiful island.

In the beginning we were a bit disappointed by the "resort" itself as I expected a bit more than the nice base camp it turned out to be. It has very simple ordinary tents (no safari style tents, I stayed in many tented lodges before in various countries) very close to one another, simple but clean shared bathroom facilities. Basically like being on a rather simple campground with food being prepared for you. But this base camp is in the most gorgeous setting with wonderful beach and views and it was a paradise for our kids who could roam around freely. We really loved the beach, the view of the cliffs with climbers, the open "cave" at the end of the beach which gave us shade in the morning, the snorkling right off the beach and the freedom of a very informal and relaxed place.

We thought that for the price paid a lot was included because all food is provided for including crackers and toast all days as well as unlimited water, milk for the kids, tea & coffee. We got to use the kayaks and had a great time. the snorkling trip was beautiful and we actually found the snorkling both on Lao Liang South and at the other island in the marine park (their standard snorkling trip) truly amazing with wonderful underwater coral worlds.

However there also were quite a couple of things that we disliked and I guess many of them would not have mattered as much had we stayed only 3 days and not an entire week over X-mas.
- there is no pretty furnishings or decorations in the simple tent, nor nice mats/cushions/chairs for lounging in front of your tent. There is not even the most basic "room service" (there is not even a broom to get sand out of the tent and believe me, there is tons; nor are your bins emptied regularly, not even the ones in front of the tents). The entire place is much simpler and plain than the nice pictures on the resort website suggest, It is a ordinary tent with 2 mattresses, a half broken lamp and a fan.

- the eating area was considerably dirty during our time here, in the end I washed all tables myself with water and soap because they were so grim dirty and obviously had not been cleaned with water and soap in weeks. at least. Kitchen is also not for the faint hearted (not even well travelled ones). Bathrooms were clean but there is no soap nor towels provided and in fact I am sure (and saw) that no kitchen staff or other staff ever washes their hands with soap after toilet. Two of our kids picked up a tummy bug there as the only place in otherwise very clean Thailand. We complained about it and it seems the manager wants to look into the matter and maybe it was only a temporary issue.

- the island felt really remote to us, which we had hoped for, but in fact it also was a bit scary with small children, in particular since there really is only the one ferry a day and the resort's boat is really bad. We got absolutely soaked anytime we went out snorkling and I really would not have wanted to go to the mainland in that boat in an emergency. So I think this is a place for rather adventurous parents only. For us it was a great place overall. But borderline remote. Ferry trip to Langkawi was really tedious and exhausting with the kids on the way back. You have to climb various times across various longboats on on sea, change at Lipe and in the end wait for more than an hour for your passport after arrival.

- our special charter boat trips were amazingly zero service. in our case as our guide did not speak a single word of English and did even try to communicate in any other way with us, he just set off to snorkel by himself, nobody ever helped us with getting in and out of the water, no snacks, drinks offered or anything on boat, boat very plain and not at all sheltered and one of the boats even without shade. there are no fins in the resort, but snorkels are good. Clearly the lousiest boat trip service in 1 month Thailand. But by far the most beautiful snorkeling, so overall it was really great. Still hope they would improve service a bit. Trips with Laurence (the nice manager) aboard are certainly much better in service

we booked via andamanadventures.com and Simon was really helpful in preparation and also after the trip. He even updated his website to reflect some of the feedback and included some of the not-only positive aspects of the resort so that visitors have the right expectations and then enjoy this very special place thoroughly.

Very special place
This isolated island is a great place to relax or climb. It is easy reachable l by Tigerland ferry or private longtail ( 1500 TBT from Libong) The staff is really nice and helpful. You live in quite comfortable tents. Basic but clean and alright. The beach is a 300 m of sand and behind is the large limestone cliff. The cliff shdes the sun after three o clock and the tide makes swimming a bit limited. We didn´t have any jellyfish or mosquitos Snorkeling is ok but not fantastic. But if you seek a different experience relaxation or if you are a climber it´s great. Went ther with my 17 y old daughter and she got very restless because there was not much to do. But thats teenagers. Food is ok but not fantastic. Evenings and social life and massage were great.

Very Good
Excellent warm and friendly staff from around the world. Fantastic island for kayaking and climbing. Food was not great but OK. Bathrooms excellent, tents a little old and not as nice as they look on the website but comfortable nonetheless. The number of jelly fish made swimming or snorkeling problematic but I don't know if it's always like that or we had bad luck. Overall we were very satisfied with our experience. The atmosphere is particularly good and we had a great time climbing and relaxing. The island itself is a very special place to stay, with its single beach surrounded by cliffs.
